How to keep a house clean? Or not?

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to one of my friends about one of our typical Mommy topics. How our housework is NEVER really done! I personally NEVER seem to manage to “catch up”. It’s like while I am working on getting a certain aspect of my life or house cleaned and under control; everything else falls and crumbles apart! I am ALWAYS searching for the secret of the universe on how to keep a house clean and in order.

But then again, does it really matter if my house is clean, organized and tidy to the extreme?

In the end does it really matter?

I have come to the FINAL conclusion that it does NOT really matter at least in the end it doesn’t.

In the end it doesn’t really matter that:

My kitchen table rarely has the luxury of a tablecloth or center piece. Well, it does have a center piece of toys, crayons, yesterday’s mail, half drank water bottles and a napkin holder that always needs refilling!

My laundry is never done. At times I might get pretty darn close but then “Jammy up time” comes and miraculously births a whole new load of laundry.

My dishes do have potential to be all done. Well, for at least a short period of time (that is if no one is home) but dishes and an impeccable kitchen at the same time well that’s a whole other story!

I can proudly say that 361 days out of the year my house is what you would call presentable… at least to a certain degree…because 4 kids + 4 birthday parties= 4 whole days of a presentable house.

I must sound like a crazy lady?

There must be other Moms 4 Boys out there who feel the same way I do! Wondering just like I do… How can I keep my house clean?

Here are a few things that I have learned that help me out!

      1.       Battle everyday with the laundry and dishes. One day of skipping the battle or retreating and your ship is sunk!

      2.       Have at least one room in the house that is still SANE! The SANE room in my house is our bedroom. It’s the one place I can go and feel like “well at least this room is still somewhat SANE and under control.”

      3.       Remind the kids gently of things that they can do to help. TRAIN them early. Even having them help with the small stuff that I so easily could do myself (and much faster.) At times while I am walking around the house I will ask some kid to pick this or that up.

      4.       Remind the kids to take their own dishes and cups to the sink! Such an easy thing that they chronically “forget” to do.

      5.       I let my children help me for the most part if they ask. When they do help wash dishes, fold  clothes or sweep for example, the WHOLE process goes much slower and at times it is not done as well as if I had done it alone. But; I want them to know that their help is wanted, needed and appreciated plus I have the hope of retiring some day from some of my duties.

I know that these tips on “How to keep a house clean” are much easier said than done. Every day is a new day. There are days where I have to remember what I once heard a wise women say “to just make sure that there is a roll of toilet paper, dinner on the table and a fresh set of clothes for the next day” Some days that’s all I can manage!

Happy cleaning from Moms 4 Boys!
